Which organization will you join as a Senior Safety Engineer?

We are currently looking for a Senior Safety Engineer for one of our clients in the energy sector, based in Nanterre.

Senior Safety Engineer: What will your missions and responsibilities be?

The Safety Engineer will be responsible for carrying out Safety Engineering activities throughout the project and will work closely with other engineering disciplines, including Process, Piping, Civil and Instrumentation, as well as with the various operating centers involved in the project.

The main responsibilities will include:

  • Identifying and characterizing Major Accident Events (MAEs);
  • Defining and implementing prevention, control, mitigation and protection measures;
  • Developing safe design solutions to protect personnel, the environment and assets;
  • Conducting Preliminary Risk Analyses;
  • Participating in safety reviews, including HAZID, HAZOP, SIL, LOPA, etc.;
  • Participating in Plot Plan and 3D Model reviews;
  • Identifying Safety Critical Elements (SCEs) and defining their criticality rating;
  • Performing Hazardous Area Classification studies;
  • Performing Passive Fire Protection (PFP) and Cold Spill Protection studies;
  • Performing Active Fire Protection studies, including firewater pump station design, firewater networks, deluge systems and associated hydraulic calculations;
  • Designing and specifying flammable gas, toxic gas and fire detection systems;
  • Defining personnel protection requirements;
  • Performing Escape, Evacuation & Rescue (EER) studies;
  • Preparing specifications and requisitions for firefighting and personnel protection equipment;
  • Carrying out technical bid evaluations and ensuring vendor follow-up.

Scope Exclusions

Risk Quantification activities, including Consequence Analysis, QRA, FERA, EERA and ESSA, as well as studies related to Design Explosion Loads and Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM), are outside the scope of Safety Engineering within the T.EN Paris organization. These activities are handled by the Risk Quantification team.

Activities related to Environment & Occupational Health and Noise & Vibration are also outside the scope of this position.

General Responsibilities

The Safety Engineer will also be responsible for:

  • Independently producing high-quality Safety Engineering deliverables, while ensuring compliance with contractual requirements, budget, schedule and project milestones;
  • Clearly justifying and defending technical decisions based on sound engineering arguments;
  • Preparing responses to COMPANY comments;
  • Preparing Engineering Queries whenever clarification is required from the COMPANY;
  • Identifying and raising any inconsistencies in the Basis of Design;
  • Attending technical meetings as the Safety representative for the activities under their responsibility;
  • Performing Safety Engineering activities in accordance with project procedures and applicable engineering standards;
  • Proposing technical and CAPEX optimization opportunities;
  • Reviewing deliverables produced by other engineers and, when required, providing technical supervision and support.

The Safety Engineer will be supported by the Safety Leads and the Safety Department specialists.

What profile and skills are required for this Senior Safety Engineer position?

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, preferably specialized in Safety Engineering or Process Engineering;
  • More than 10 years of experience in Safety Engineering within the Oil & Gas, petrochemical and/or Energy Transition sectors;
  • Strong technical experience in Safety Engineering;
  • Excellent knowledge of international Safety Codes and Standards, including NFPA and API standards, IP codes, as well as major client Safety Specifications;
  • Knowledge of Canadian and Quebec regulations would be an advantage;
  • Solid understanding of Oil & Gas and/or Energy Transition facilities;
  • Strong technical judgment and the ability to optimize or modify plant design;
  • Fluent English, both written and spoken;
  • Good command of Microsoft Office tools, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as Adobe Acrobat;
  • Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multicultural and international environment;
  • Strong commitment, proactivity, rigor and autonomy;
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage interfaces both within and outside the HSED team;
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills, with the ability to identify issues and propose appropriate technical solutions.
